What is tuXlab?

tuXlabs is an ICT model aligned to the South African E-Education Whitepaper. A tuXlab is implemented through a 7 step project management cycle that aims to deliver a platform for sustainability in the project. The vision of the project is to develop an easy replicable solution for schools which can be extended into other community development programs.

tuXlabs is build around the open source philosophy of freedom to share, freedom to use, freedom to replicate, freedom to distribute. A tuXlab network runs completely on open source software which offers many benefits technically but its major component is ownership. The use of open content is alsowell intrenched into the tuXlab network.

TSFTop100 Builder

The program was initiated in 2002 and now consists of over 200 school community partnerships throughout South Africa serving over 160000 learners. tuXlabs was further recognised among the Top 100 Technology Awards during 2005 and was awarded Community Builder of the Year Award in the same year.

Current tuXlab partnerships include

  • Western Cape: 120
  • Eastern Cape: 50
  • Limpopo: 31
  • Kwa-Zulu Natal: 3
  • North-West: 3
  • Gauteng: 1
  • In addition to the above sites, several projects will be initiated to extend the growth and replication of tuXlabs.

Howto tuXlab

The entire project cycle will be documented in a Howto tuXlab manual which will allow anyone to setup their own tuXlab or improve on the processes. This documentation phase of the project will be finalised and released during 2007. A version 1 was completed in 2005 and can be found here: contribution by Jean Jordaan, Upfront Systems

The tuXlab Linux Distribution

We use a derivative of Edubuntu and Xubuntu, called tuXlab GNU/Linux. The tuXlab Linux distribution is fairly new. We will launch a separate website for this soon, which you can preview at http://www.tuxlab-os.co.za
