9 February 2007, 10 high schools situated in the Northern Cape are gaining a big investment to support the improvement of mathematics and science results in their schools. The schools form part of the National Department of Education's Dinaledi programme currently running in 400 schools throughout the country. The Dinaledi Program was initiated to improve the Maths and Science results and increase the number of learners that participate in these subject areas. Government continuously request support from the corporate and NGO sector to ensure initiatives and resources are implemented in these schools to achieve these results.
Today Absa, through their community investment arm, the Absa Foundation, ENGEN Corporate Affairs and the Northern Cape Education Department's Dinaledi team formed a partnership to ensure the goals and objectives are met in these ten schools. A total of R600 000 will be invested by ENGEN and Absa to implement the Shuttleworth Foundation's tuXlab program in the ten schools. This partnership between the schools, Department of Education and the corporates will be launched today in Upington at Saul Damon High School. Other schools included in the program are Mogomotsi High, Kimberley Girls -, Monwabisi -, Weslaan -, Carlton van Heerden -, SA Van Wyk -, Sutherland -, Vuyolwethu -, William Pescod High Schools. The project will be implemented by Inkululeko Technologies, the tuXlab program currently runs in over 200 schools in South Africa. tuXlab computer networks use open source software and content.
Both Absa's Moshe More and Engen's Khanyisa Balfour agrees sustained partnerships and sound investment are components required to achieve the National Goals. The collective Corporate support for the programme will make a greater impact and the school communities reaps the benefits. The learners and educators will be encourage that partnerships such as these is aimed at impacting their future.
Each school will gain computer equipment, mathematical and science content and software that will be used by the Maths and Science learners only. All the Maths and Science educators will undergo training on how to use the content and prepare lessons. The learners will now have access to dedicated resources during and after schools hours to help perform research, complete projects and improve their understanding of Mathematics and Science.
Fred Nassi says: “ this programme will deliver much needed resources to allow us to deliver even greater results then the Matric class of 2006. We need more learners in higher grade, these learners and educators require resources and through Absa, Engen and Shuttleworth's investment - the Department's aims are now achievable. We are now tasked to ensure that the project makes an impact and deliver the intended results. We further hope the Northern Cape tuXlab model can be implemented in all the other schools nationally.”
